Survivor: Pulau Tiga Tips For Winning At Office Politics

The show that made "tribal council" an American catch phrase is really just a huge experiment in group dynamics. Thankfully, you don't have to go under the microscope of the American public to learn the lessons of career survival. Take some cues from the castaways of the original "Survivor" series with these tips for managing office politics. (You'll have to stay tuned to take the advanced course - Survivor II premieres January 28.)

Sometimes playing dumb works.

Sean feigned ignorance about the Alliance. He didn't tip the Pagong people off about the Tagi alliance, and it kept him in the game until the last 5. Currying favor (as Sean did when he allowed Richard to breakfast with him) is always useful as well.

Don't work if others are willing to do it for you.

Gervase broke out his deck of cards, but not a sweat, to avoid getting voted off after he offended members of his tribe, and managed to make it to the final 7. Just remember this strategy will take you only so far.

Make everyone like you - and seem unthreatening.

With her perky demeanor and scrunchily cute smile, Colleen didn't scare anyone, and made it into the final 6. For those of us who aren't very cute or petite, a good attitude is even more important.

It doesn't pay to play fair.

Gretchen wanted to rely on using her wits and outdoor skills to stay in the competition and objected to targeting people simply because they might pose a threat to her. Too bad the Tagis booted her the minute they got the chance. Remember: hard work isn't enough. A little workplace savvy goes a long way.

Cultivate a unique skill.

Richard's scuba ability and dexterity with the spear kept the group fed and kept him on the island despite his arrogance. Maybe learning JAVA would do the same for you.

Manipulation and intimidation can be effective.

Richard played on the other castaways' insecurities so he could win the big prize. Prerequisites for this tactic: The abilities to keep track of your lies and hold a straight face as you do so.
